Sample article …
Etisalat has bought a 40 percent stake in the new Nigerian telecom carrier from UAE’s Mubadala Development, which was awarded a telecom licence earlier this year for USD 400 million. However, Etisalat did not reveal the value of the transaction. Mubadala will hold a 30 percent shareholding in the new company, while the remaining 30 percent stake will be held by local Nigerian investors.
With this acquisition, Etisalat will be able to offer fixed-line, mobile phone, international calling and data services in Nigeria, and will become the country’s fifth GSM and third fixed-line carrier. The company expects to roll out its services in Nigeria in March 2008. Etisalat will invest nearly USD 1 billion in the country by 2010 to install a network. Moreover, the company plans to ink deals with equipment suppliers by October 2007.
Mohammad Hassan Omran, the chairman of Etisalat, stated that currently, the country has a penetration rate of 20 percent; therefore, it offers huge growth potential for the company.
