Overview
The East and West Europe region collectively has 191 active mobile network operators offering voice services over their own networks. These operations range from the tiny operators of Liechtenstein to the giant groups such as Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom with multi-million subscriber bases throughout the continent.
Presented below is a chart of mobile subscribers throughout Europe (based on data available within this directory). During the quarter of Q3 2011 you can see that the regional total surpassed 1 billion subscribers with a slight drop in the 4th quarter, but still exceeded the 1 billion mark. Into 2012 the region continued to grow reaching in excess of 1.032 billion mobile subscribers.
The same research shows that the 3 largest networks (by subscribers) all operate within Russia with a collective 189 millions subscribers. Outside of Russia, T-Mobile and Vodafone Germany are the biggest operations with each claiming in excess of 33 million subscribers. The average European operation has around 5.4 million subscribers and the dominant platform is GSM, with only 10 true CDMA competitors.
